Risk Zones

GREEN (normal bone)
 # Universal health recommendations: 1200 mg of calcium and Vitamin D 400 IU daily with regular exercise.
Limit alcohol intake (1 drink/day) and no smoking.

YELLOW (prevention zone)
Medications for prevention include estrogen or Evista, low dose Fosamax, and Actonel
Significant Risk Factors identified that strongly influence treatment include:

  • Family history of osteoporotic fracture (maternal hip fracture)
  • Current use of corticosteroid (prednisone) or coumadin
  • Body weight under 120 pounds

RED (Treatment Zone)
Medications for treatment include Fosamax, Actonel, Evista and Miacalcin

NOTE:
Anyone with a prior osteoporotic fracture requires pharmacological treatment regardless of bone density measurement.  DEXA may be repeated after two years.
