Patient Name ______________________________________ Date: ________________

Results for ultrasound at the calcaneus:
The bone density has _____ BUA units at the age of ____.
This represents a _______% current fracture risk.

RISK ZONES:

GREEN (Normal bone)
# Universal health recommendations: 1200 mg of calcium and Vitamin D 400 IU daily with regular exercise. Limit alcohol intake (1 drink/day) and no smoking.

YELLOW (Prevention Zone)
Medications for prevention include estrogen, low dose Fosamax, and Actonel.

Significant Risk Factors identified that strongly influence treatment include:

  • Family history of osteoporotic fracture (maternal hip fracture)
  • Current use of corticosteroid medication (prednisone) or coumadin
  • Body weight under 120 pounds

RED (Treatment Zone)
Medications for treatment include Fosamax, Actonel, Evista and Miacalcin.

NOTE: Anyone with a prior osteoporotic fracture requires pharmacological treatment regardless of bone density measurement. Ultrasound may be useful for follow up after about three to five years.
